A referendum was held in Belize on May 8, 2019 regarding the territorial dispute with neighbouring Guatemala. Voters were asked whether the border dispute with Guatemala should be submitted to the International Court of Justice.
Belizeans were asked to vote yes or no to the following question: “Do you agree that any legal claim of Guatemala against Belize relating to land and insular territories and to any maritime areas pertaining to these territories should be submitted to the International Court of Justice for final settlement and that it determines finally the boundaries of the respective territories and areas of the Parties?”
The historic referendum’s resulted in 55.4% of voters approving the proposal and agreeing to allow the International Court of Justice to resolve the dispute between Belize and Guatemala.
